This book was born from a horrible moment in my life. That moment was the day after Thanksgiving last year, when my wife and dog were attacked by another dog. Jeanne was physically fine, soon after the attack, but Oreo was gravely injured. For weeks, I watched her suffer and I was consumed with sorrow and helplessness. But, as a person of faith, one never knows when God will intervene and provide you with clarity and comfort, and I can tell you, He did so at this time.
Inspired by the poetry of Wendell Berry and the writings of C.S. Lewis, this is a journal of 100 days that reflect my pain and sadness, and my ultimate awareness and joy. It is at its core, a search for light within darkness and I found it within the beautiful nature of God. And though it may darken again at times, I know I will never be without light. That light that God has imbued into every aspect of the world around us will resonate within me and will be a beacon that I will forever follow.
I go through life now with a different way of seeing, and I have a little black and white dog to thank for prompting me to look out the window.
I hope you find beauty in these pictures I’ve tried to paint within this book, a calming strength within the words, and hopefully, a kindred spirit. The book was the recipient of the Georgia Independent Author Award for 2023 for best collection of poetry.
